I’ve heard mixed opinions on GPS units for golf. Some people say they wouldn’t golf without one, and others say they’re no better than a novelty item. If you own one, what is your opinion? Has it improved your scores?
I have one and use it regularly.
The good:
If you are stumped for a distance, say from the rough or other place where markers generally aren’t placed, it is very helpful. Most courses have decent markings if you are in or near the fairways.
The bad:
1) You become dependent on them and forget how to judge distances for yourself.
2) Your golf buddies will be pestering you constantly. You will be barraged by a stream of "how far am I?" questions. If the distance is inaccurate, it is now YOUR fault. It becomes a real pain in the putter after one or two holes. It can be quite distracting.
Has it lowered my score? Maybe. All it has done is illiminate bad shots based on my misjudging distances. It has not eliminated my bad shots.
Let your golf partner get one and bug him/her instead.

I not going to give you a long drawn out answer , I love my skycaddie 2.5 I have had it about a year now . it surely speeds up the game you don’t need to look for yardage markers and yes it has shaved a couple of strokes off my handicap because I have an exact yardage and I can shoot for the flag everytime with confidence I would highly recommend .

SkyCaddie is great (the yearly fee sucks) – especially if you like to play different courses often. If you play one track over and over you are probably familiar enough with the course that a device like this wouldn’t help too much.
Most people (even some with GPS) just look at the number to the center of the green. Knowing how deep the green is and the exact numbers you need to carry the golf ball is critical to scoring low. Most greens front to back can be 2-3 clubs difference.
If you get one – use it to set up your approach shots. Find two or three yardages that you are very comfortable with (ie: you can hit a SW 93 yards on the nose). Plan your hole backwards from those spots.
SkyCaddie is the most accurate because they actually walk the courses. Can’t speak for all others – but most use satellites like google maps or something. They will probably be accurate enough for most. I think the GolfBuddy (satellites) has no yearly fee – which is awesome, but it will cost you more up front.
Learn to use one correctly and your scores will go down.

It;s illegal and only helps you if you can hit precise distance otherwise knowing the precise distance would give you any advantage.

Hi there,
I recently purchased a Sky Caddie SG5 and it is the best thing I ever did.
I am now absolutely sure of the yardage to the front, back and centre of green and hit my shots a lot more positively. I don’t need to worry about anything but striking the ball well now.
You can also measure out how far you hit the ball, this is great for hitting balls on the range. Or even measuring how far you’ve hit a great drive.
Hope this helps
Iain
